Valencia's master plan was created 1965 by the legendary planner Victor Gruen. Valencia has been developed over the years by Newhall Land and Farming Co. in accordance with that plan, which includes not only residential development, but work, education, recreation, shopping and medical care. Located in the heart of the city of Santa Clarita, the community occupies a portion of the original 36,000-acre Newhall Ranch and contains more than 15,000 homes.
Valencia provides tens of thousand of jobs for its residents and others. From the medical facilities, large industrial complexes, retail and service businesses, including the Princess Cruises headquarters, to the film industry, job opportunities abound.
Santa Claritas main educational institutes, Masters College, College of the Canyons and the distinguished California Institute of the Arts are also located in Valencia. These institutions will soon be joined by the future campus of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Film and Television Preservation Center, and possibly other related organizations involved in the preservation and study of music, theatre, film, radio and television. These institutes are in addition to the many California Distinguished Schools and Legacy Private Academy.
Valencia is also home to government, health care, dining, recreation and entertainment, as well. The Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce, Santa Clarita City Hall, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital and the county civic center are located in Valencia. Valencia's recreational facilities, include, The Ice Station Valencia, an indoor ice-skating complex; The Paseo Club, private tennis and aquatics club, and TPC at Valencia, a Tournament Players Club golf course and Valencia Country Club.
